The tradition started in 2005 by ‘Perla’ as the first gem of the Histria Fleet, nowadays comprising 11’Jewels’, is continued by a new generation of Oil/ Chemical Tankers, setting new standards in the shipping industry, of which ‘Histria Atlas‘ will be the first.
It’s a longstanding naval tradition for new ships to be sponsored by a civilian, typically a woman. With this honorific title, our very special guest, Mrs. Gabriela Salerno, blessed the first of its kind MAXMR1 ship, the ‘Histria Atlas’, officially named the ship, and blessed her with ‘FAIR WINDS AND GOOD FORTUNE TO ALL WHO SAIL WITH HER!’
A honor reserved for the Godmother involves breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow of the ship.
The event was attended by an exclusive crowd, joining the 2300-strong work force who had completed this newbuilding to the highest quality standards that made us all proud.
During a long and fruitful career, our ‘Atlas’ will sail all across the world, confronting the vast expanses of the oceans. Several refits will be performed through her operational life, keeping her up to the latest industry standards
We congratulate our lady Sponsor, Mrs. Gabriela Salerno, for all the good luck she will bring to the ship. We congratulate all the Captains and crews that will safely steer her through the voyages.
The event gathered all workers from the SNC Shipyard and Histria Shipmanagement SRL, nevertheless all passionate for vessels and special guests: the representative of the Classification Society, Mr. Ugo SALERNO, the representative of the ship-owner’s financing bank, ABN Amro Bank of Rotterdam, Mr. George ARCADIS, the representative of the shipyard’s financing bank, Raiffeisen International AG, Religious christening of the vessel, the fanfare of the Navy.
The vessel was open to visit and for that the crew of the vessel rendered assistance to all visitors. They offered a special tour of the vessel for all those interested.
Master declared that for him, it was an opportunity and a special occasion to be part of such a great project, working with SNC and Class Society Rina. The experience cumulated over the years at sea and during dry docks, Captain declared that he used all his experience to prepare the vessel for voyages. The fact that he was part of this project helped him also to gather more experience and to improve his skills.
Saint Nicholas is considered the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, and students in various cities and countries around Europe.
The vessel was honored with Saint Nicholas icon received from the Archbishop of Dobrogea: Teodosie after the religious ceremony performed for the vessel Histria Atla
